Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about moving house, packing and booking with us in Wellington.

Quotes & booking

How much does it cost to move house in Wellington?

Every move is different, so we quote each one. The main things that affect the price are how much you're moving, access at both ends (stairs, lifts, steep driveways and parking), the distance between addresses, and whether you need packing, storage or furniture taken apart. Use our online quote form with the volume calculator and we'll get back to you with a price.

How far in advance should I book movers?

As early as you can. Two to four weeks is a good guide, and more for weekends, month end, school holidays and the summer peak. We can sometimes help at short notice, so it's always worth asking.

Do you charge by the hour or a fixed price?

We can do either depending on the job. Your quote will set out how you're being charged and what's included. See our booking policy for how bookings, changes and cancellations work.

Do you do small moves?

Yes. Whether it's a single sofa, a studio flat or a few items from a Marketplace purchase, get in touch and we'll quote to suit.

Moving day

Can you handle steep driveways, stairs and houses with no truck access?

Yes, that's everyday Wellington moving for us. Tell us about stairs, long paths and steep or narrow driveways when you get a quote so we can plan the right crew and time.

Do you move apartments in the Wellington CBD?

Yes. Let us know the building, floor and whether there's a lift or loading dock. Most buildings need lifts booked in advance, so check with your building manager and we'll plan around the booking times.

Who arranges parking for the truck?

Please make sure there's somewhere legal for the truck to park close to both addresses, such as a driveway or clear kerb space. If you need to reserve on-street space, contact your local council about the permission required. We're happy to advise on what will work.

What happens if it rains on moving day?

Wellington weather is part of the job. We wrap and cover furniture to protect it and keep moving in normal rain. If conditions are unsafe, such as severe wind or flooding, we'll work with you to reschedule at no charge.

Do you take beds and furniture apart and put them back together?

Yes, we can disassemble and reassemble beds and larger furniture on request. Let us know in your quote request so we allow time for it.

Will you disconnect my washing machine, fridge or dishwasher?

Please arrange disconnection of plumbed or gas appliances before we arrive. Defrost and dry your fridge and freezer the day before, and fit transit bolts to front-loader washing machines if you have them.

Packing & supplies

Do you sell moving boxes and packing supplies?

Yes. We supply boxes, portable wardrobes, mattress and sofa covers, bubble wrap, packing paper, tape and more. Request packing supplies and we'll confirm pricing and availability.

How many boxes will I need?

As a rough guide, a one-bedroom home needs around 15 to 25 boxes and a three-bedroom home 50 to 70, but it depends how much you own. Our box guide breaks it down room by room.

What can't go on the truck?

We can't carry dangerous goods such as gas bottles, petrol, paint, chemicals and ammunition, or perishable food and animals. Please keep cash, jewellery, important documents, medication and keys with you.

How do you look after fragile or valuable items?

Furniture is wrapped in padded blankets and strapped in the truck. For fragile items, pack them well with paper or bubble wrap and label boxes clearly. Tell us about anything especially valuable, heavy or delicate, such as pianos, antiques or large mirrors, when you get a quote.

Areas, storage & offices

Which areas do you cover?

We're based in Lower Hutt and move people across the Wellington region: Wellington City, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua, the Kapiti Coast and the Wairarapa.

Can you arrange storage between homes?

Yes. We work with local storage facilities and can move your furniture into storage and bring it back out when you're ready.

Do you move offices after hours or on weekends?

Yes. Office and commercial moves can be scheduled early, late or on weekends to keep disruption to your business low.

Is my furniture insured during the move?

We take care with every item, and our terms and conditions explain our liability for goods in our care. We also recommend checking that your home contents insurance covers your belongings while they're being moved.

After you move

Who do I need to tell when I change address in New Zealand?

Common ones are NZ Post mail redirection, your bank, IRD, NZTA for your driver licence and any vehicles, the Electoral Commission, your power and internet providers, your insurer, and your council if you have a registered dog. Our moving house checklist has the full list with links.

I'm renting. How much notice do I need to give?

Under current tenancy law, tenants can end a periodic tenancy with 21 days' written notice. Fixed-term tenancies work differently. Check the details for your situation at tenancy.govt.nz, and see our guide to moving out of a rental.
